- better init script (no need to call load settings and also applies to canvas) - better rescan (rerenders all, and more computations are done in the backend) - better window on-ready mechanism so that first load is almost 100% guaranteed and much faster than using an uncertain timeout

WIP
I may try splitting this PR into separate PRs after all changes that I want to include are settled. It is currently getting too large in scope but due to the massive diffs it is hard to decouple at this point.
