About the PR

Added a "GuideBook" with bad Clown Gimmicks and a slippery use to the book, like the clown's pda.
Added: Silly Billy's Clowning Guide
Tweak: now the clown role starts with the "Silly Billy's Clowning Guide""

Why / Balance

Most of my friends who started to play SS14 played as a Clown at least once time at the starter rounds. Normally clown is a role that gets much attention, but normally is overwhelming, having infinite possibilities and the opportunity to do anything, the problem with so much possibilities and no idea of what to do is having no lead, and that gave me the idea of making a book that makes you slip if you run over it with some bad advice and cool gimmicks. I wrote it based on SpaceLaw. I tried to do the whole book as: "you can get caught, but I'll be fun". Most of the things in the book are just silly and fun gimmicks that are not hurtful, just annoying at maximum, and the ideas in the book can't put any fun or in-game character at risk, so it should be fine!

Technical details

Added: Silly-Clown-Guide.ftl
Tweak: now the clown role starts with the "Silly Billy's Clowning Guide"
Tweak: Books.yml now has the book: Silly Billy's Clowning Guide

  1. Could you explain why this is an IC document instead of a part of the guidebook?
  2. Should this really be given to all clowns? Could it instead be given to the theatre vend or only given to clowns with under a certain amount of play-time?
  3. The current document is fairly barebones, why not add some colour or other formatting to it?

(Not a maintainer, just a triager giving an opinion) I am very concerned that this may cause issues for new players.

Some of the things you suggest can very easily land you in a cell, and I don't want players thinking that because the book says it, the behaviour is acceptable.
Furthermore, clowns have a LOT of rp potential, and I am worried this will bring them closer to the way a lot of people already treat them: A soft antag whos primary job it is to mess with sec/command (This is not the case, unless you roll an antag, you are a NON ANTAGONIST, so please don't slip every security officer you see, including during them chasing dangerous suspects, and then whine when sec throws you in a cell as an accessory to the crimes comitted by the suspect you helped get away)

I will still triage the PR as normal, just know I am opposed to this being added like this, especially when it could just as easily teach new clowns how to ACTUALLY be funny and unique and not just a giant pain, which would be great to see.

I also agree that this item should just link to a guidebook entry, and possibly not even be an item at all.

Woe, grammar review be upon ye!
Two issues came up that I didn't point out every instance of:

  1. You tend to use the wrong character for apostrophes (you use single right quotes instead)
  2. Your choice between single and double quotes is inconsistent throughout.
  3. Your double quotes are non-directional, and they probably shouldn't be (or just make your single quotes non-directional as well)

As a general note: Why are we advising clowns to be such self-antags? This seems like it would WORSEN the behaviour of new clowns, not improve it.

The apostrophe here is incorrectly formatted. It should be U+0027 (Apostrophe) instead of U+2019 (Single Right Quote Mark).

This probably stems from an issue in whatever code editor you are using, you may wish to check your settings.

Same character error as above.

1. Block Hallways with Performance Art!

Why it’s Artistic (AND Legal):
Space Law prohibits vandalism that damages station property, but says nothing about "temporary art installations." Welder-tank piles, banana-peel mosaics, or welded barricades labeled "CLOWN ZONE" are legally defensible as "cultural expression." If Security tries to dismantle it, scream "CENSORSHIP!" and demand a warrant for departmental searches. If arrested, your sentence caps at 5 minutes for "petty vandalism," giving you plenty of time to plan your next art show!

"temporary art installations." should have the full stop outside the quotes.
"Welder-tank" should be replaced with "fuel tank" to match its title in game.
"banana-peel" should be unhyphenated.
It should be "departmental search", singular. Also this is bad space law advice as they don't need a warrant to do this.
"petty vandalism" is not a crime, "Vandalism" is. Also the comma should be outside the quotes.

2. Spike Drinks with Non-Lethal Funnies to Enhance Comedy!

Why it’s Delicious (AND Legal):
Space Law bans mindbreaker toxin and space drugs (BORING!), but ignores "mild" chemicals like Mute Toxin (silences victims) or Ipecac (induces vomiting). Spike the bartender’s supply, then document the "hilarious" results. Since you’re not targeting individuals (just the whole bar), Security can’t charge you with poisoning without witnesses. If caught, claim you were "testing beverage innovation"! The maximum sentence is 10 minutes for "possession of restricted substances".

This paragraph contains plenty of that character error again.
Space Law does not actually contain any direction on legality of any chemicals, although admin rulings suggest that any chemical derived from Vestine should be considered Syndicate Contraband.
"possession of restricted substances" is not a crime, see above. You're also way more likely to get brigged for Assault.

3. Exploit Medical ‘Self-Treatment’ for Chaos!

Why it’s Medically Unsafe (AND Legal (Maybe)):
Steal medical stimulants (e.g., Ephedrine) to run 200% faster. If caught, claim you ‘need them for clown ADHD.’ Medical staff can’t deny treatment for self-diagnosed conditions!

Meth only caps at 1.35x move speed.
Also medical absolutely can deny you care.

4. Cover EVERYTHING with Funny Glue!

Why it’s Sticky (AND ABSOLUTELY Legal):
Get a toy-box from Cargo with all the funny glue you can carry. Put it in your backpack, then go around applying funny glue to any minor contraband. Give glued items to Security or mailboxes! Toy boxes are your job gear! They cannot charge you for working hard at your job, nor take it from you without reason!

Bad space law advice (they can take it from you if used in a crime).

5. "Accidentally" Deploy Slippy Things in Security Hallways!

Why it’s Slippy (AND ABSOLUTELY Legal):
A master trick is knowing what tools you can use on the job. For slipping, use common and handy items like soap, banana peels, your clown PDA, maybe?! OR EVEN THIS BOOK! If you can make them slip, just toss your tools near the Security exits and wait for the slipping to begin. Extra funny if you can get space lube for the whole Security hallway! And if you get caught, just blame the nearest mime or say it slipped out of your hand!

Sentence beginning with "Extra funny" is gramatically malformed.

Your changelog isn't properly formatted. You should take the changelog out of the brackets and use that.

My point exactly. If this is going to be added, it should, IMO be a guidebook page with ideas and suggestions for clowns on how to actually entertain the crew without it being at the expense of sec/command, whose problems most clowns compound with borderline if not outright self-antag behaviour. If you want the item to stay, maybe make it so that the item links to the guidebook entry.

To be honest i think i over stepped when i got the option to make it to be a real book, and it goes too much out of the first ideia i had, that is giving the book basically empty thing(it was completly ureadable) and as his unique feature being slippy, as a way to giving another gimmick's to clown head start on a safer way of doing people slip other than dropping the whole pda or doing 90% of the things i seen as a sec is the clown going on maints and opening every maint locker they can and doing random things like weapons basically completely out of role things, the clown is someone that most people see them as a soft trouble maker, problem is that the problems they cause are things that most of them can't be interacted and are just random illegal things with no rp value. The idea of the book was never to be a real guide it was more supposed to be a "bad gimmicks book" of a clown that got spaced by the own station crew, now im probably gonna do some changes and wipe these ideas to something softer and more in game healthy or maybe ill just rollback to the main idea :p

It would probably be "better" for this book to open a clown-specific page in the guidebook UI, rather than just being a "normal" book, since that makes it more consistent with similar "tutorial" books (like the books that trainee roles spawn with).
