Issues are categorized by priority and type. You can view all the different types of labels here.
An abstraction of several related issues. Think of it like a sub-project. You can view all the milestones here.
To take on an issue, select "assign yourself" on the right pane. If there's an issue already with someone assigned and you'd like to work on it, comment on the issue and tag the person (using @). Ask them what is the status of the issue. If they don't response in a reasonable amount of time or if they are unable to complete the issue, go ahead and take on it. This is a what we refer to as the "dibs" system.
