Terminology

This topic describes terminology for use in

Roll

  • Longitudinal axis
  • Tip: Hold the device up in front of you with two hands like your holding a steering wheel, and look at the screen. Rotate the device around screen center, like you would turn a steering wheel from left to right.

Bearing

  • Direction of a distant object relative to the current course

Heading

  • Direction of travel

Yaw

  • A yaw rotation is a movement around the yaw axis of a rigid body that changes the direction it is pointing, to the left or right of its direction of motion.

  • Tip: Hold the device up in front of you with two hands like your holding a steering wheel, and look at the screen. Push your left hand back and forward (and alternatively righ hand), rotating the device around is vertical centerline.

Latitude

  • North-south position of a point on the earths surface

Longitude

  • East-west position of a point on the earths surface

Altitude

  • Height of ground above mean sea level

Height

  • Height of feature above mean sea level or ground (depends on data)

Speed

  • horizontal distance traveled by an object over time

Vertical Speed

  • Rate of change in altitude - ascent or descent

Magnetic declination or variation

  • Angle on horizontal plane between magnetic north and true north
