I think that activating and deactivating the map overlay, especially for traffic for example, could be a very practical thing to set up, by putting a sort of switch below the active map selector, on the map ( see image ).
This avoids having to go back into the preferences each time and click on the empty option in the selector, which could also be confusing for some users.
