I'm a freelancer and I write develop software and hardware, see for example my Kerberos MIDI cartridge for the C64, which is in github here as well, including all software, the VHDL design, the schematic diagram and the board layout.

I also help other open source projects with bug fixes, new features etc. If you sponsor me, I would have more time for my projects and for helping others, and could work less on proprietary projects for my clients.
