Storage API support cleanup

I'm having problems commenting on your previous pull request, so I figured I'd do so in the form of a diff (since I wanted to walk through things anyway).

It's largely formatting (someone is still creating tabs) and docs, but there's also some simplification, particularly around SGRecord and GeoJSON serialization when submitting requests as well as the removal of some copypasta.
