# Ambassador Emeritus Program

GraphQL Ambassadors make lasting contributions to the GraphQL community. The
Ambassador Emeritus Program recognizes those contributions and gives former
Ambassadors a way to remain part of the community after stepping back from an
active Ambassador term.

Emeritus status is a continuation of the relationship built during an
Ambassador's term; It enables people to step back from the program's formal
commitments while remaining connected to the Foundation, the GraphQL project,
and the Ambassador community.

## Becoming an Ambassador Emeritus

An Ambassador who leaves the active program in good standing will become a
GraphQL Ambassador Emeritus. This will most often happen when an Ambassador
reaches the end of their term and chooses not to renew.

Moving to Emeritus status is not a judgment on the value of an Ambassador's
contribution. It is a way for the Foundation to recognize their service and
maintain the relationships and knowledge built during their time in the program.

Emeritus status does not require annual renewal. An Emeritus Ambassador may ask
to leave the program or its communication channels at any time.

## What Emeritus Ambassadors retain

Emeritus Ambassadors remain valued members of the Ambassador community. They:

- are recognized in a dedicated Ambassador Emeriti section of the GraphQL
website, with thanks for their contribution to the program and the wider
GraphQL community
- can choose remain on the Ambassador mailing list
- are welcome to join quarterly Foundation and TSC Q&A sessions and other
Ambassador calls
- may continue to take part in Ambassador discussions and volunteer for
community activities when they wish
- receive the "Ambassador Emeritus" role on the GraphQL community Discord; their
name remains green and they retain access to the private Ambassador channels

Emeritus Ambassadors may describe themselves as a "GraphQL Ambassador Emeritus"
or a "former GraphQL Ambassador".

## What changes

Emeritus Ambassadors are no longer active Ambassadors. This means that they:

- are not required to complete [Ambassador tasks](./tasks) or meet the minimum
activity requirement for an active term
- are not eligible for Ambassador travel funding or content-creation honorariums
described in [Financial Support](./financial-support), however they can still
access the [Grants program](/grants)
- are not listed or promoted as current GraphQL Ambassadors, and should not
represent themselves as currently holding the active Ambassador role

## Community standards

Emeritus Ambassadors who remain in Ambassador spaces must continue to follow the
GraphQL Code of Conduct and the Ambassador
[Standards of Excellence](./standards). These expectations apply when
participating in Ambassador channels, calls, or other program activities, and
when identifying themselves in their Emeritus capacity.

The GraphQL Foundation may suspend or remove access to Ambassador spaces where
this is necessary under the Code of Conduct, the Standards of Excellence, or
other applicable Foundation policies.

## Returning to active Ambassador status

Emeritus status does not prevent someone from becoming an active GraphQL
Ambassador again. An Emeritus Ambassador who would like to return to an active
term should contact the Ambassador program organizer. They will need to meet the
current [Ambassador Requirements](./requirements) and follow the review or
renewal process in place at that time.
