T2.2 Data Collection Spreadsheet to CKAN HOW TO

Instructions for transferring the meta-data to CKAN:

The main idea is to transfer the information gathered in the spreadsheet to CKAN.

As stated in my previous email on this subject, in order to access our CKAN instance, you need to create a new User: https://ckan.myclimateservice.eu and then let me know your user account so I can give you permissions to add information to the Groups and Organizations there.

To create a new Dataset just go to Datasets and fill in the form with the data you already introduced on the spreadsheet. We have created a “translation” table on the first tab of the spreadsheet, check it when in doubt.

The only tricky bit about the whole process is understanding that Datasets contain Resources and what that entails for your data. A brief explanation on this can be found in here: https://docs.ckan.org/en/latest/user-guide.html#datasets-and-resources

We have created an example for some CORDEX files in here: https://ckan.myclimateservice.eu/dataset/euro-cordex-eur-11_ichec-ec-earth_knmi-racmo22e

Please, take into account that your dataset may contain only one resource and that that resource may be a link to the data file or files. In our example we’ve decided to group CORDEX files according to Domain/Model/Variable in order to avoid introducing each file individually due to the huge amount of CORDEX files that will be used. If you are in doubt about how to proceed, let us know and we can discuss which may be the best approach.

The last step would be to associate your dataset with a Group, to do this you have to go to the Groups tab on the dataset and select the appropriate one. Currently there are only two groups but more will be added as needed. I think Pascal is already working on that.
