When you create an outward-facing application where the user needs to access this API on the client side, they should be using their own API credentials instead of yours so that your key is not leaked to the public. This is potentially problematic, however, as if someone uses two different client-side applications that use this API, the second app would overwrite the first's key. As a result, we have user agents available to use to earmark an API key for a specific application so that it persists until the app creator refreshes it. Each app should create one agent name that it uses for all users, an alphanumeric key both unique to that specific app and visually identifiable as belonging to that app. Then, request all the client side API keys using that agent. When you go to make an actual API request, you should send, in the Username field, username+agent instead of sending just username.
For example, imagine that you are working on an app entitled "testapp1". Given this uniqueness, you could name your agent as such. Therefore, all client-side requests for API keys should be make in the form /api/v1/getkey/testapp1. Then, if you were to make an API request from the user "jdoe", you should send the Username field as "jdoe+testapp1".
For the majority of possible uses of this API, agents are unnecessary. For the case in which it is necessary, however, proper use is critically important. If you have any questions, please ask.
Each request to an API endpoint must include an HTTP header X-WSSE which contains all authentication information for the request. The header includes four important components:
- Date and time in W3DTF UTC format
- Username of the API account to authenticate with
- Nonce (random base64 string, recommended 32 characters in length)
- Password digest
To create the password digest value, the user must combine the raw nonce value, the date, and the shared secret (in that order). The combined value should be SHA256 hashed, and then base64 encoded.
Before including the nonce in the header, it should also be base64 encoded. Here's a sample X-WSSE header value for the API account "jdoe" with shared secret "secret":
