Introduction

The game’s story will be shown to the player at the beginning of the game in flash screens, giving the player context and an end goal. There are 5 screens in total, designed with the same aesthetics as the rest of the game’s visuals.

Purpose

This user testing will allow us to evaluate how effective the story screens are, and how well the users can understand what they are about to play. Context and a story with stakes is important for player engagement and investment in completing the game.

Test Plan

Due to some complications with implementing the title screens, the testing plan was modified a bit.

  1. Give users some context as to what they are going to see
  2. Show users the story screens separately (originally just able to start the game and have the screens play)
  3. Start the game and let the users play for a bit
  4. Allow them to complete the survey

Quantitative Questions

  1. The game intro was helpful for introducing the background and context to the game.
  2. The game intro graphics and descriptions were boring and lacked creativity.
  3. The game intro was well integrated and matched the gameplay.
  4. The game intro was unnecessarily complex and inconsistent.
  5. The game intro graphics were well designed and aesthetically pleasing.

Quantitative Question

  1. What aspects would you improve about the game intro?

Feedback

Quantitative Answers

Overall people were agreeable on the introduction screens. In particular, there were able to glean the story and context of the game just by the screens. There was some disparity on the actual aesthetics and how the graphics looked, but users generally agreed the story was conveyed clearly.

Qualitative Answers

Several users suggested the use of music to help set the mood, and complement the main goals of the introduction. Another user's feedback was more against the concept than the screens them-self but one user thought the mix of space and norse mythology was a bit cluttered.
