Function without perl present in the system
All parts using perl have an alternative implementation written in Bourne shell and using standard utilities. etckeeper can now run on e.g. embedded systems without perl. The non-perl parts are only run if perl isn't present in $PATH.

I was initially confused because it seemed the fallback code was run even when perl was present. And it did, but perl consumed all stdin already so it would do nothing. Moving into else to make clearer.

Don't hardcode the master branch when pushing to PUSH_REMOTE.
Instead, let git push whatever branches it is configured to push to that remote. This allows for branches other than master to be checked out and be pushed. git has several configs for what branches to push, including push.default, and remote.*.push. Support platforms without
hostnameI just recently started using etckeeper on one machine (thanks, I like it!), and then a few days ago set up a new Arch Linux machine and went to run etckeeper on it, but it failed to init properly due to depending on the `hostname` binary, which is no longer installed by default on Arch Linux. Concretely, /usr/bin/hostname comes from the inetutils package, which used to be installed by default, being part of the base group, but is so no longer, not being a dependency of the new base package. [1][2] I figure that `cat /etc/hostname` is a decent alternative. etck-commit: handle -m'msg' argument, i.e. when there is no space

etck-commit: use rest of command line as message
Makes `commit` use the rest of the command line as message, i.e. not just the first argument. This means that now all of the following work: ``` etckeeper commit -m'My message' etckeeper commit -m 'My message' etckeeper commit 'My message' etckeeper commit My message etckeeper commit -m My message ``` This was motivated by a lot of commits in my history that just had the first word, because I got into the habit of not using quoting characters, for whatever reason. Fix vcs subcommand setup for zsh completion
There was a missing backslash in $_VCS setup caused by a bad re-wrapping on my part. Also, we don’t have to care about custom setup for the vcs subcommand with completions other than _git, as the others can function directly without setup.

Use portable "command -v" to detect installed programs
The "which" utility is not guaranteed to be installed either, and if it is, its behavior is not portable either. Conversely, the "command -v" shell builtin is required to exist in all POSIX 2008 compliant shells, and is thus guaranteed to work everywhere. Examples of open-source shells likely to be installed as /bin/sh on Linux, which implement the 12-year-old standard: ash, bash, busybox, dash, ksh, mksh and zsh. Examples of open-source shells possibly installed as /bin/sh on a Debian system, which do NOT implement the 12-year-old standard, and are therefore in strict violation of the Debian policy manual as per Debian bug #864615: posh (Users of posh as /bin/sh on Debian will find that etckeeper no longer works entirely as expected.) A side benefit of using the POSIX portable option is that it requires neither an external disk executable, nor (because unlike "which", the exit code is reliable) a subshell fork. Removed the debian directory from the upstream source package
As it's not being maintained; see the debian package for an up-to-date one. debian/changelog moved to CHANGELOG and debian/copyright to COPYRIGHT.

In particular, make list-installed use a consistent sort order no matter the locale. In post-install.d/50vcs-commit, an old and new output of that are diffed, and if the locale varied between old and new being generated, the diff could be longer than necessary, leading to more packages being listed as changed than actually changed. Whether that could actually happen in practice, I don't know. In pre-commit.d/30store-metadata, there were two code blocks that both tried to make the sort order stable. Combined them to make clearer what's going on. And since LC_COLLATE beats LANG, only the former needs to be set. The only other use of sort looks to be in post-install.d/50vcs-commit, but there it is only being used in order to uniq, so stability does not matter, so didn't change it there. (It would be possible to set LC_COLLATE globally, but that risks somehow affecting VCS internals or the editor run for etckeeper commit.) This commit was sponsored by Ethan Aubin.

Ignore udev's FHS violating large binary cache file /etc/udev/hwdb.bin
On debian it is not present by default there but in /lib/udev/hwdb.bin, but I think it gets created if /etc/udev/hwdb.d/ has files added to it; see hwdb(7). This file is a FHS violation because /etc is for configuration. It boggles my mind that udev willfully violates the FHS. Shame. Shame. Shame.
