did myself a wee favor in this PR by refactoring some fragmented code like timestamp parsing and making a centralized
Spear.request/5function for synchronous requestsshould make the rest of the protos a little bit easier to wrap
this one was one of the largest that remain so hopefully it's all downhill from here until persistent subscriptions
