Glossary

We are typically using a three level hierarchy for the names of the checks with "." separating the levels. In general, the form of the names is object.property.checkType. In some cases the object consistes of several tokens, i.e. resource.abstract.

These are definitions of the terms used in the check names and the number of times they occur.

abstract	3	A summary of the contents of a resource. Generally used on landing pages to provide information that can be used to decide if a resource is of interest and as a target for full-text searches.
access	4	Obtain, examine, or retrieve (data or a file) or the right or opportunity to use or benefit from something.
affiliation	8	An organization that a person or resource is associated with.
annotation	1	A note by way of explanation or comment added to metadata.
anonymous	1	Access to a resource without a specific login or account.
arctic	1	The regions around the North Pole.

authenticated	1	Prove or showed to be true or genuine.
award	10	A grant or contract that provides financial or other support for the work that resulted in creation of the resource.
boundingBox	1	Rectangular region on the surface of the Earth that contains a resource.
cardinality	1	The number of elements in a set or other grouping, as a property of that grouping

check	16	A a test used to evaluate metadata completeness, quality, or congruence.
checksum	2	A digit representing the sum of the correct digits in a piece of stored or transmitted digital data, against which later comparisons can be made to detect errors in the data.
citation	2	A reference to a resource, especially in a scholarly work.
citationLinkages	1	A Web reference (i.e. link) to a resource, especially in a scholarly work.
codes	1	A system of words, letters, figures, or symbols used to represent others, especially for the purposes of secrecy.
congruent	3	in agreement or harmony. In this case applied to data and metadata.
constraint	1	A limitation or restriction.
contact	22	A person or organization.
contentType	1	A description of a group that content in a resource belongs to.
controlled	5	supervised by a known authority or community, as in "controlled vocabualry".
ControlRules	1	Rules that supervise the behavior of something.
count	1	The total number of something.
counterUsage	1	Using the Counter specification for determining usage of resources.
coverage	3	The extent to which something deals with or applies to something else.
creationDate	1	The date on which something is created.
creator	12	A person or organization that brings a resource into existence.
database	1	A structured set of data held in a computer, especially one that is accessible in various ways.
date	4	The day of the month or year as specified by a number.
description	4	A spoken or written representation of a resource.
differs	1	be unlike or dissimilar.
distribution	6	The action of sharing resources among a number of recipients.
doi	1	Digital Object Identifier: a type of resource identifier.
domain	1	A distinct subset of the Internet with addresses sharing a common suffix or under the control of a particular organization or individual.
email	6	An address for a person or organization that can be used to send electronic mail.
entity	60	A thing with distinct and independent existence and properties.
enumerated	1	Listed one by one.
extent	1	The size of a something using spatial, temporal, or other dimensions.
format	3	The way in which something is arranged or set out.
funder	4	A person or organization that provides money for a particular purpose.
geographic	2	Based on or derived from the physical features of an area of the Earth's surface.

hasPart	6	A description of the relationship between resources used in the DataCite metadata schema.
identifier	134	A string of characters that identifies something.

keywords	9	A word or phrase used to describe a resource. Can be free-text or selected from a shared vocabulary.
landingPage	3	A Web page used to describe a resource that is the target of an identifier, typically a DOI).
length	2	The measurement or extent of something from end to end.
license	14	A permit from an authority to own or use something, do a particular thing, or carry on a trade (especially in alcoholic beverages)
location	1	A particular place or position.
lookup	1	The action of or a facility for systematic electronic information retrieval.
metadata	10	Structured and standard information about a resource, i.e. the metadata record itself. For example, the metadata.identifier.present check tests for the presence of an identifier for the metadata (i.e. not an identifier for the resource).
methods	1	A particular procedure for accomplishing or approaching something, especially a systematic or established one.
minimum	1	The least or smallest amount or quantity possible, attainable, or required.
missingValue	1	A special value used in data to indicate that actual data are missing.
name	2	A word or set of words by which a resource is known, addressed, or referred to.
nonproprietary	1	Not registered or protected as a trademark or brand name

numbers	2	Arithmetic values.
obsoletes	6	A description of the relationship between resources used in the DataCite metadata schema.
org	1	Organization
overlap	1	A part or amount which overlaps.
placeName	1	The name of a geographic entity.
point	1	A point on the surface of the Earth, typically specified by latitude and longitude.
polygon	1	A region on the surface of the Earth, typically specified by a set of latitude and longitude points.

present	162	The state of existing in a metadata record. In this case, a type of check that is successful if an item exists in a record and fails if it does not.
processStepCode	2	Computer program that executes a step in the creation of a resource.
provenance	74	The history of a resource or the process that created the resource.
provided	2	Made available for use.
provider	1	A person or organization that makes a resource available for use.
pub	1	Public
public	1	Ordinary people in general; the community.
publication	1	The preparation and issuing of a resource for public access..
publicationDate	1	The date on which a resource is published.
publisher	5	A person or organization that prepares and issues resources.
quality	1	The standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree of excellence of something.
qualityDescription	1	A description of the quality of a resource.
related	21	Belonging to the same family, group, or type; connected.
repository	2	A collection of metadata, data, or other items and the organization that manages the collection.
resolvable	46	Capable of being found using a Web address or an identifier.
resource	147	The primary object being described by the metadata. Examples from the DataCite resourceTypeGeneral vocabulary include: Audiovisual, Collection, DataPaper, Dataset, Event, Image, InteractiveResource, Model, PhysicalObject, Service, Software, Sound, Text, Workflow, Other. Ecology Metadata Language includes five resources: dataset, citation, software, and protocol.
reuse	1	The action of using something again.
revision	1	The action of revising.
revisionDate	1	The date on which an item is revised.
sampling	2	The action or process of taking samples of something for analysis.
schema	1	A model that defines items and relationshiops between them.
service	3	A process that provides data over the Web.
size	1	The relative extent of something; a thing's overall dimensions or magnitude; how big something is.
sourceEntity	2	A resource that is used in the creation process of another resource.
spatialExtent	5	The area on the Earth that something covers.
specified	1	Identify and described clearly and definitely
study	1	The devotion of time and attention to acquiring knowledge on an academic subject by means of books, data, and other resources.
submission	1	The action of presenting a resource for inclusion, consideration or judgment
sufficient	5	A type of check designed to test whether specific metadata content is adequate for a specific purp[ose.
taxonomicExtent	1	The amount of a taxonomy that a resource covers.
temporal	1	Relating to time
temporalExtent	1	The amount of time covered by a resource.
timeframe	1	A period of time, especially a specified period in which something occurs or is planned to take place.
title	3	The name of aresource.
trace	4	A path which represents the process of creating or modifying a resource.
type	48	A category of people or things having common characteristics.
unique	2	Being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else.
usage	1	A description of how a resource is used.
UsageRights	1	A description of how a resource can be used.
vocabulary	1	The body of words used in a particular language or scientific domain.
