To merge after 3.3.0 release: general cleanup of unused code
Prompted by time wasted on too many false positives, when searching for occurrences and trying to figure out how metacat works :-)
Note this PR is not intended to be all-encompassing - I just picked some fruit that was annoying & low-hanging. I fugure that's the only way we'll eventually get to a better place - elephant carpaccio
