Microsoft Windows

"Windows protected your PC"

On Windows, when trying to open the launcher for the first time, this window might appear:

This is because the launcher is not signed. Signing applications costs developers hundreds of dollars and – for an open-source project – it is not viable. However, rest assured that the launcher is safe to run, and the source code is publicly available in this repository to be reviewed if necessary.

To be able to open the launcher, you need to click "More info" and then "Run anyway"

I can't run the game because the launcher does not detect the components as installed
No green check marks in the Installer tab after installing
"You need FreeSO and The Sims Online installed to launch the game"

Please make sure you are using at least version 1.9.0, in which this has been addressed.

"End of central directory signature not found" when installing a component

Please update to version 1.9.1 which addresses this issue. If you already have version 1.9.1 and are encountering this issue, then reinstall the launcher from https://beta.freeso.org, as it was released as a silent patch only for new downloads.

Optional components do not have the green checkmark

Optional components are not supposed to have a green checkmark when installed.

EPERM: operation not permitted

Occurs when some other program/process temporarily has exclusive access to a file, and the launcher is also trying to use it.

This can happen, for example, when installing the remesh package while having FreeSO open. Some antivirus can also block access to files while scanning.

Make sure FreeSO is closed whenever you are performing installations.

As a last resort, rebooting your computer will most likely end the process that is keeping hold of the file and solve the problem.

macOS

"FreeSO Launcher" cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified

On macOS, when trying to open the launcher for the first time, this window might appear:

This is because the launcher is not signed. Signing applications costs developers hundreds of dollars and – for an open-source project – it is not viable. However, rest assured that the launcher is safe to run, and the source code is publicly available in this repository to be reviewed if necessary.

To be able to open the launcher, you need to first click Cancel in the first window, and then you need to go to your Mac System Preferences > Security & Privacy and click "Open Anyway"

Can I use Simitone on Mac or Linux?

Yes. For Simitone to work on Mac or Linux via the launcher, you need two things:

  • A copy of The Sims Complete Collection in ~/Library/Application Support/FreeSO Launcher/GameComponents/The Sims (macOS) or ~/f/GameComponents/. You can copy your folder from a Windows installation and put it there.
  • Simitone itself. You can download it from the launcher.

The Mono install is taking a long time. Is it stuck?

Mono will take a few minutes to install depending on your computer. It is normal and should be left to finish.

I have to force-close FreeSO when I close the game from the traffic light controls

This is a known issue and shouldn't bring any problems. Just force-close the game. A way to avoid this is to exit from the game itself instead of the traffic light controls.

Does Discord Rich Presence work with the Mac version?

Yes. If your Discord isn't currently showing the game's Rich Presence, please try re-downloading the Mac extras from the Installer tab.

Does TTS (Text-to-speech) work on Mac?
