Build Instruction: Alternate Solar Array Build

GodspeedDiscvry edited this page Apr 15, 2021 · 2 revisions

In the event that you do not have a 3D printer larger enough or do not choose to purchase printed arrays from Re:3d, you may do an alternate build with mostly common materials. The ends of the arrays will still be printed and joined with an acrylic tube. The panels are made from poster board, covered in blue mylar wrapping paper (with solar cells drawn on with metallic gold sharpie), emergency blanket, and tape.

Build Articulating implements - Solar Arrays (detailed build instructions coming soon)

  • print Mast Ends
  • install metal core in mast can
  • cut acrylic tube mast down to size
  • prepare truss inside (tri-folded clear transparency tube with black sharpie battens)
  • insert truss tri-fold into mast tube
  • install mast in mast can
  • install array end on mast
  • prepare solar panels
    • cut poster board
    • draw grid on blue mylar with gold sharpie
    • apply blue mylar to poster board (glue stick) and trim with exacto
    • apply gold emergency thermal blanket to other side of poster board (glue stick) and trim with exacto
    • laminate with thick 3M clear packing tape and trim
  • install solar panels in mast ends (slide into groove in printed ends)
  • Note: materials used are for exact thickness required to slide into mast end grooves
