I was able to replicate Gmail shortcuts using BetterTouchTool. See this comment on Stack Exchange for details.

It's true using BTT can achieve useable though not perfect shortcuts. I was using that before this tool.
There are issues like you need to tell such shortcuts should only apply in certain scenarios, like in main window, not compose window. Using window name begins with Inbox may work most of the time, but not all.

Sadly I switched to FMail2 which is a wrapper of web interface with shortcuts.
