Simulating a smaller monitor on my 4K 32" ?

Hi,

I have a 32" 4K monitor with an M4 Pro Mac Mini.
I'm in the market for a secondary office monitor (probably 24-27"), mainly for use with my wife's M1 Macbook.
In order to decide between sizes and a 1080p or 1440p monitor, I'd like to get an idea of what a macOS desktop would look like at these smaller sizes and resolutions.
I'm used to HiDPI/Retina and while the 1080p monitors are very cheap and tempting, I'm worried that text will look really terrible.

Could I use BetterDisplay to simulate these smaller monitors on my 4K display (with black bars around) ?
I understand I can't have the exact physical size AND resolution I want at the same time, but hopefully it will be close enough.
I suppose can't just tell BetterDisplay to simulate a physical screen size and I have to do the math myself ?

Yes, you can create a 1080p virtual screen (make sure you set it to LoDPI) and then use the Stream Virtual Screen menu to stream it to your real display and use the Zoom and Underscan settings to change the size of the display.

Alternatively you can simply create a PIP window and resize that as you wish.
