Dynamic progress step use case

Background
In the new profile creation flows we're developing, users might be asked to go through additional verification steps depending on the country they're residing in or if they fail previous verification checks

Question
Per the Paste documentation, it's recommend we 'keep the placement of Progress Steps consistent between different pages (steps)'. However, if we need to include additional steps in the journey would it be appropriate to adjust the stepper accordingly? Are there any other teams that have run into this use case?

So to kick off, the wording in the guidelines "keep the placement of Progress Steps consistent between different pages (steps)" is about the overall placement of the whole component. For example, don't have them at the top of one step, but at the bottom of the next.

In the up-coming Wizard Template, there is going to be some guidance around forks in logic:

If you need to use Progress Steps and there’s forking logic in the flow, hide Progress Steps until there’s a single path forward, or make the step labels generic enough to cover all variants of a task.

So that might be something to consider. If the path through the process is somewhat indeterminate and variable, progress steps might not even be the answer and be more confusing than useful too.

We don't really have any strong opinions about not doing variable paths, such as adding or subtracting steps, as a condition of your progress. It might be totally reasonable. We'd love for you to test it with customers, though, and bring back your findings, so we can weave it into the up-coming wizard template.
