Can't Find Speed Limit Quests ("Never Shown in..." Message)

Hey everyone. I'm new to StreetComplete, but I've been an Organic Maps user for a bit. I really enjoy the speed limit features in that app. I recently discovered StreetComplete and think it is brilliant. Thank you for making a great and easy way to contribute to OSM.

I enabled the Speed Limit quests on my app but it shows a message that says "Never shown in US-MO." (Where I seek to contribute.) And I also don't see any quests for speed limits.

I don't understand what "Never shown in US-MO" means. Do I need to enable a setting or something in the app? Or are there other forces in play that make it so I don't see any speed limit quests where I am at?

Any help would be appreciated. (I can also send screenshots if needed.) Thank you all!

Speed limit quest is not available in USA, see #813 for some gory details.

In short: there are some problems that do not really make it possible to enable it in USA and as far as I know there is no active progress on fixing them.

Thank you for the links. I've read through the issue and I must admit that I am a bit confused. To my understanding, @westnordost doesn't want to permit inputting speed limits in the US because the tagging scheme for implicit speed limits the app would need to create would be very complex, and all of this is to help avoid users inputting a raw numeric value for a speed limit?

As a newcomer, I am not sure why a tagging scheme for the roads is necessary when a numeric value is sufficient. I would like to contribute if possible, but the current approach of needing a tagging scheme for each road/state/county seems a bit unnecessary. It is true that some roads in the US don't have speed limit signs on them. But, I'm not sure why the user couldn't input that there is no sign, that the speed limit is implied, and that be enough. Any insight as to why a tagging scheme is needed for the roads would be helpful.

(I mean no criticism in this comment, and I apologize if I've come off as being rude. I'm just trying to understand the logic behind the current decision making.)

I have seen no signs whatsoever of that (may be part of that USA vs Germany difference in what amount of frankness and directness is desirable, and it gets even stronger in say Poland, hopefully I have not come as rude somewhere else)

maxspeed:signed is not really used (that much) yet, so prior discussion on tagging mailing list or another community channel is imperative.

I tried to participate in discussion and confirm with community that such tag makes sense (rather than establish it by force by including it in editor) but I failed to convince general community that it is something that is useful and makes sense and would be fine to use.

Though linked https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/tagging/2021-January/thread.html#57929 happened years ago at this point, so maybe trying again may make sense.

That's exactly the issue. There is currently no accepted or in-use possibility in OpenStreetMap to just tag the absence of a speed limit sign. We can't just make something up. It would need to be discussed in the OSM community at large before we could use such a tag, best in the format of a proposal.

That being said, given the existence of https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Default_speed_limits , it might be possible to enable the quest for at least those subdivisions of the USA that base their default speed limit on urban vs rural and/or implement a UI for a follow-up question that asks for residential district / commercial district / rural for US states that base their default speed limit on that.

As I understand USA has both extremely intricate default speed limits - while at the same time speed limits are typically signed, and missing speed limit signs are really rare (from what OSM mappers living there told me). This makes maxspeed:signed=no more useful there than elsewhere.

US-MO means Missouri in this instance. Usually the human readable name of the region would be displayed, but it looks like Java doesn't know how the subdivisions are named, so the ISO country code is displayed instead.
