This do-a-thon will only be run in the third session, starting at 3.30pm local time

PersonalData.IO is a Geneva-based nonprofit focused on making personal data rights actionable and useful.

For this we build basic but trust-inducing tools to help:

• individuals reappropriate their personal data
• communities find new value out of this datahas a methodology

We are trying to show people what would be possible, an hoping that will resonate with them.

We cannot be everywhere, so we have developed a methodology to help empower
local and temporary communities, particularly in the context of conferences.

OpenCon is particularly attractive because of the community present during the conference, and the local community's current struggles to be heard regarding development of a Smart City concept in a neighbordhood of Toronto. In other words there is a community within the context of OpenCon that is both local and global, and probably able to "see further", and more able to get there on its own (we are ourselves part of the open community!).

What are we working on during the do-a-thon? What kinds of support do we need?

I am not in Toronto, but am will be assisting remotely. Read on for the concept of the Do-a-Thon

The "work" in the doathon will be focused on testing and "ideating" around one of our "products". In other words, you should test out one of our digital tools, see what works and doesn't for you, discuss it amongst you, and provide feedback.

The tool helps you compose legally-sound letters to "reappropriate" your personal data, i.e. talk to entities who might have it, and use your legal rights to get a copy of it. Note that we only introduced two entities to start with, and one law (the Canadian privacy law).

How can others contribute?

3. Help each other in the room, not everyone will have the same background of technology expertise
   and life experience.
4. Depending on how many people are participating, it might make sense to share more formally the information that is relevant to this project: technological expertise, legal expertise, where you live, etc.
