I realize this is slightly off topic but figured id ask just in case.

Could this be used for adblocking purposes?

Im wanting to block youtubes new ad serving methods since they changed it from just blocking the ad serving domain names.

I've heard that adblock filter lists cannot completely block Youtube ads anymore, but I don't know the details. Can you explain what Youtube is doing now, or point me to relevant documentation/discussion please?

Otherwise, SSLproxy in combination with Squid could be used to block ads. I had Squid running in cascade with E2Guardian in UTMFW in the past. I have never tried adblocking with Squid myself, but it would be a nice addition to UTMFW.

To be honest, I havent even given it a shot with squid yet. I have pfsense running on a box with squid installed but I havent added any ad blocking lists yet. Defintely will give that a shot, thank you for the advice.

As for documentation on how the new ad serving works, I have not been able to find ANY documentation on it. It looks like the current ad block extensions in browsers use some hacky techniques like this. But, Im not sure if this info is even useful even after SSLProxy can decrypt it.

Im no networking expert but I thought SSLProxy might be a good place to start breaking down the process a bit more.
