@vguerracanedo mentioned during the meeting on 2016-05-16 that we should perhaps look into getting a speaker from the field and/or industry. The following is taken from an email she sent with more information.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I would love to follow up with the idea of having a speaker from the field. I could check with Nicole on how realistic it would be.

We have a lot of different interests in the group, so it would be hard to think of just one speaker that would be ideal for everyone. In general, it would be nice to have one person that talks about the programs and challenges that they face on their job. I'm biased towards Marine Science and Conservation in general, so my first thoughts reflect that. Here are a few (biased) ideas of potential talks.

  • A guest from the department of Genetics and Genomics Research Activities of the USGS. The researcher could give a presentation on the programs that they use for their work in Conservation Genetics, Environmental Toxicology, Epidemiology or Genetics in Water quality and PH Microbiology.
  • A guest from the Ministry of Environment to talk about how their data gets analyzed.
  • A guest from DFO (Dr. Kristi Miller-Saunders? -Biotechnology/Genomics/Fish_Population_Science)
It would be nice to hear about programs / techniques being used by the Fisheries and Oceans Research

I'll be meeting with Nicole (from the Library) to talk about the idea next week.

Hi guys,

The research commons may be able to bring some speakers / workshop leaders. The talk or workshop has to represent more than one discipline, so we could invite a speaker / workshop leader that could touch subjects related to Biology / Statistics / Microbiology (or any other combination of disciplines). Please note that across disciplines doesn't have to be Social Science and Business, it can be Biology and Microbiology.

Do you have a suggestion for a speaker or a workshop for the sicprog-sfu? Please let us know if you do.

Here are some additional examples: SMRT® Analysis tools (for PacBio data), epigenomics dana analysis, De Novo alignment and analyses of data from non-model organisms, PRIMER (or other ecology related programs), etc.

We should plan for at least two speakers per semester. At the last meeting (August 4th) we discussed the idea of an honorarium, but funding for that might only be available if it is oriented towards career development (@BrunoGrande has more details) . @vguerracanedo your suggestions seem good, we should try to make it happen!
