Minion using legacy request server protocol

After upgrading master and minions from 3006.7 to 3006.14 the master log is flooded with this message for every minion.

[salt.channel.server:839 ][WARNING ][449667] Minion using legacy request server protocol, please upgrade <minion_id>

I can't seem to find what exactly needs to be updated on the minions.
