I'm not sure if this thread was ever followed up. Since I ran into the same issue (and since this is a fairly recent thread), I created a debug ID from a ref that has a "de" prefix of the last name: I have stored the author as I'm getting |

I am second-guessing myself now with my choice of storing it as Some authors (including this one) cite themselves in their own papers as In those cases, should it be stored in the bib database as I know these prefixes always mess things up ... |

I tried the citekey format
authorsAlpha + shortyear
to get alpha-like citekey. Yet it is unlikely to deal with lastname prefixes (von, van , de).
E.g. with authors A, B and von C, it generates ABv instead of ABC or ABvC.
