How to close a portalled popover when the trigger element disappears?

I have some popover content that is shown in a portal when a trigger button is clicked. That trigger button will disappear when the viewport size is below some threshold, but the popover content still shows in the upper left corner of the browser. Is there a way to close the popover content when the trigger disappears? Or even just close the popover content when the screen size changes?
