vscode does not detect hatch env

Doc states that vscode now auto-detect environments created by hatch. This does not happen for me (using just installed vscode 1.109.5). I still have to manually point to .local/share/hatch/env/virtual/myname/. AFAICT, hatch is installed globally (running hatch in a terminal out of any virtual environment works).

Related to #600 but it is supposed to be solved.

What can I try?

I would recommend taking a look at https://github.com/flying-sheep/hatch-code/releases/tag/v0.1.0 which was just released by @flying-sheep and I think they have done the right approach.

that one had a packager bug and won’t work, check out the fixed release: https://github.com/flying-sheep/hatch-code/releases/tag/v0.1.1

before a stable release I’ll get the CI to a point where things like that won’t happen again!

While the extension might be good in the future, it would be great if the already built in detection would be working again too.
I don't want to use extensions for stuff that worked out of the box before.

well, you probably have two choices

1. disable the vscode-python-envs extension, that should re-activate the existing code
2. use my extension

But if 1. doesn’t work and the code included in vscode-python ever breaks, you only have option 2. Why? Ask the vscode-python people. I only built the extension because they basically told us that they planned to …

1. … remove vscode-python’s environment management in favor of vscode-python-envs at some point.
2. … give pip, uv, conda (and for some reason pipenv whatever that is) special treatment in vscode-python-envs, but other environment managers need to build their own extension
3. … no longer accept contributions to fix the existing integration of 2nd class citizens in the main Python extension

so unless you can convince them to fix the existing code in vscode-python or my extension are your only option.

once I publish it, I’ll ask them to advertise it when a hatch.toml or [tool.hatch] config in pyproject.toml exists, then people will get a popup that helps install it.
