Its been a while since i wrote this ticket - but i think what i had in mind was more like, if we could push missing book metadata to openlibrary.org after we manually added a book to lspace. But i dont think that is possible via API, and i am still not sure if its a good idea...

The getting-metadata-for-isbn part is already based on openlibrary (via isbnlib), and only if that has no result google books is queried.

Push missing book metadata? I don't understand, you mean like add missing metadata to openlibrary.org based on what you manually entered?
