Will WMS imagery sources be supported?

WMS-based imagery services have been appearing a lot and I was wondering if there was a possibility of using WMS as it is intended (one single request for the entire screen) instead of the TMS-workaround (lots of small requests, imitating a tile based approach and putting a LOT of strain on the server)
