I wonder if this might be helpful to integrate with cookie cutter? They have a good command line interface to get you started. Could also be useful to tie into that ecosystem?

I actually started doing that in #4 but gave up in the end. It's good for automatically filling in some fields but it also raises the barrier to entry (people have to learn a new tool just to get started). I ended up going with a simpler template for now. But I'm open to trying it out again the future. It would help to have a paper-template-sample repository generated by the cookiecutter. It would serve the same purpose as the current repository.

Ah, good point. That is cool, have the template and the cookie cutter. One auto generated from the other?

Yeah, it could be done automatically by TravisCI
