When deploying ALTER TABLE queries on production, analyse expected impact through SHOW TABLE STATUS; for smaller table (small Table_Rows value) modification can probably tke place online without anyone noticing. For the larger, either:

  • warn
  • black & refuse
  • check if online table operations is available (InnoDB 5.6)
  • suggest online table operations (openark kit, percona toolkit, FB OSC)
