I get these feature with JetBrains AI assistant.

But I prefer Copilot. So, is there a way to get this feature?

I'd need to try again, but when I last looked it only mentioned changes within the current windows, not the whole changeset.

It's worse than that, I made a single edit to an existing page, and its comment was appropriate for the introduction of the file which was changed but not appropriate at all for the change: - e.g.

"Added a new form with validation for the creation of a new client"

As opposed to: "Removed unnecessary using statement". Given the page has been in the system for months, the recommended comment was totally misleading (and you have to type a whole sentence, as opposed to the Rider (and I assume other JetBrains IDEs) having a simple button press in the commit dialog.

As of my last update in January 2022, GitHub Copilot does not officially support PyCharm for generating commit messages.

I saw in the official Copilot princing page that it has "Commit message generation" but clearly not for Rider/JetBrains IDE so...

At least they didn't lie. It works in Visual Studio Code, though! Still nothing in Jetbrains IDE's (Using PhpStorm 2023.3.5)

This is a feature that is absolutely needed. Jetbrains AI Assistant already supports it... I'm even thinking about trying it out and maybe switching to Jetbrains AI Assistant.

I miss some of the features of the AI Assistant, but when it went to a costed option, I'd already renewed Co-Pilot for a year and couldn't justify having both. Because I used the trial, I've no longer got the ability to review whether the underlying AI Assistant suggestions have improved, so unless the support PR suggestions via Co-Pilot, it'd be good if they could incentivise switching and/or performing 7 days per year of re-evaluation.

In my case, for Odoo development, Copilot gives by far the best suggestions when coding, adding comments/docstrings and providing assistance through the chat. I have used "Jetbrain AI Assistant" and Tabnine, none of those can compare. I'm only using "Jetbrain AI" for commit auto-completion. As soon as Copilot gives this feature, I'm stopping paying for "Jetbrain AI".

I have also tried the trifecta and come to the same conclusion. Copilot generates far better than either Tabnine or AI Assistant. The commit message generation is so useful. I feel like Copilot should be able to do this with relative ease if the project is being committed to Github.

I have a trick to generate git commit messages using co-pilot

1. Right-click file from change list commit box
2. Click Copy as Patch to Clipboard
3. Type in Copilot chat generate commit message based on diff below and paste the patch. You can paste patch for multiple files.
4. And co-pilot suggests a beautiful commit message.

You can hit max token limit if changes are too much. I exclude new files from this to avoid this issue.

Shortcut to write entire diff to clipboard on macos

git diff | pbcopy

You can customise diff command and add to alias based on your needs.

In fact, you can directly ask copilot chat to provide a commit based on the modified file.

It only looks at the modified file, the JetBrains AI looks at all changes in the commit set (or at least in all open windows) and it uses the diff to comment on the changes made, not just looking at the whole file and summarising its purpose.
