The desire
To be able to restrict the creation of unintentional protected branches but still allow users to merge PR's to protected branches.
The Problem
Users can unintentionally create protected branches that match a pattern and then are unable to properly work with their branch without admin assistance.
Outline
A branch protection pattern exists for
*-release
.Branch
cool-release
has been created by a user with permission, other org users need to merge PR's to this branch without special permission. The creation of branch
foo-release
should be blocked for standard users. There is an existing feature to block creation of protected branch patterns but it requires the activation of blocking ALL PR merging to the protected branch as well.
