Random hostname for private GH EMU. How is it determined and how permanent is it?

I have Enterprise Managed Users on my corporate account. I have a repository and I wanted to create its documentation using github pages. It all works fine but, as it's well established by many posts and the documentation itself, I am going to get a random hostname to ensure that the authentication is carried out. Something like word1-word2-randstring.pages.github.io.

This is kind of fine, although suboptimal because of course it's not the kind of url I want to give to our corporate users.

I have two questions:

1. How is the random url assigned and when? In other words, is this url picked once and for all? will it change according to, I don't know, a redeployment, or anything else? How permanent is this hostname in referring to that repository pages?
2. assuming I can change the CNAME (and in fact I could), what do I need to ask to my company's IT to ensure that we get the chance of setting the name to something like mystring.myorganisation.pages.github.io to give a reasonable url to our users, and at the same time, a hostname for which our organisation is authoritative within the context of github pages? Is it even possible to do so?

Hello,

1. It is random but will stick so long as you don't delete your Pages site (via API, or by setting the source to Branch = None).

2. You can setup a custom domain for any Pages sites on GitHub.com, including the private ones (i.e. the ones with a random URL by default). We don't support org authoritative Pages domain today on GitHub.com. You would need to ask your IT to setup DNS records on any domain of your liking for each individual Pages sites. Wildcard DNS records should not be used with Pages custom domains at the moment (they are subject to takeover attacks until we improve our domain verification system).
