Copilot not suggesting anything until I run Copilot panel

Copilot wont suggest anything until I use that command.

copilot.vim 1.17.0
Neovim 0.9.5

The same thing is happening for me. Once I open the panel, it takes a few seconds but then suggests some solutions. Then it'll start suggesting solutions directly in the code again

Since I was having this same issue, I built a workaround. Not ideal, since it makes my neovim startup quite slow, but once it's open it works fine.

Add the following two lines to your init.vim:

autocmd VimEnter * Copilot panel
autocmd VimEnter * q!

It automatically opens the panel buffer when you open nvim and then closes it. Bit annoying that we need this for copilot to work though.

Any idea why our copilot won't work until we open the panel window @tpope ?

That's a weird one. You could try checking :Copilot log after trying and failing to get it to offer completions and see if there are any errors or other clues.

Hmm, I'm not getting any errors.

I did notice, though, that copilot IS working without opening panel first, it just takes very long (like over one minute). After that initial wait, solutions come in quickly. Running :Copilot panel or :Copilot log right at start (like in my workaround above) fixed this wait time. Any idea why running panel or log might change this behavior?

As far as workarounds go, you could try this, might be a less aggressive way to jostle it into waking up:

autocmd VimEnter * call copilot#Call('checkStatus', {})

This didn't work. With only this command, I don't get suggestions.

check your proxy settings

Might be a dumb question, but what does this mean? Where would I do this

BTW, the Node.js version constraint has finally been addressed, so this is no longer necessary:

When it's failing to offer up completions, does anything appear in the logs?

Copilot.vim 1.21.0 has improved logging, if you want to try again.

When I disable the workaround I mentioned above and try opening vim and then :Copilot log, all I get is

[INFO] [agent] GitHub Copilot Language Server 1.166.0 initialized

even though I am in a buffer with a file where I would normally get prompts for.

If I then run :Copilot panel, after 2-3 seconds, I get the first [INFO] fetchCompletions log.

This is my whole log up until the first [INFO] solutions log:
