Description of issue

I cannot install ISL(A dependency for GCC, whish is required for z3, which is required by ruby, which is required by Vim)

Ahh the good 'ol First GCC problem. Actually the problem lies further down the line: ruby <- rust <- llvm@17, and the fact that you are trying to install isl is due to Homebrew automatically selecting gcc as the compiler for z3, which is a dependency of llvm version 13 and beyond.

If you really needs gcc see #3513. If you only want vim to build somehow, there's a link in that discussion too about how to build llvm (currently at version 17) on High Sierra. Your first z3 can be built with llvm@12, which does not have z3 support enabled and will compile with system clang.

I don't get it, the Ninja on my system was built 1 year ago and was built successfully, and it didn't involve shadowing the system python 3.7.5 by disabling SIP. There're multiple formulae using ninja for building, so my Ninja actually works with current [email protected]. Let me see what have changed in that formula.

WRT getting your ruby built, it's not that hard once you have done it once (as I have finished just now):

$ xcode-select --install                           # In case you have not installed CLT
$ export HOMEBREW_NO_INSTALL_FROM_API=1
$ brew install llvm@12 --build-bottle                 # Hours of build. No need to pass --build-bottle if you skip the next command.
$ brew bottle llvm@12                                 # Remember to tuck away the generated tar.gz file, so you don't have to build llvm@12 again in the future.
$ ln -s ./llvm@12 /usr/local/opt/llvm                 # This makes llvm_clang available to Homebrew's build system
$ brew install z3 --build-bottle --cc=llvm_clang      # I'd archive z3 too because it can't be readily compiled with system clang
$ brew bottle z3

Then we'll need to edit the llvm>=13 source code before compiling. I prefer doing a patch so the build can go unattended. $ brew edit llvm then add a line patch :DATA somewhere before def install, and append these to the end (after the last end\n):

Using a really, really old Mac, that's why.

And all the SIP/quarantine madness since El Capitan (some /usr paths are no longer writable), and then the ARM64 madness, makes me reluctant to move on. Not quite ready to wave goodbye to some gems.

I am using a 2011 21.5" iMac
SIP is annoying, plus the new apple silicon computers are entirely non-upgradable and they can only run one thing.
While they are good for the average person, the average user does not need a $1000 computer.

You could try out OpenCore legacy patcher.
However, most apps are still broken anyways so it does not make much sense IMHO.

Ubuntu and Linux Mint work great until you reboot a couple times and your iMac refuses to boot up ever again.

This is very useful. Just be careful, the code is for llvm 16 and llvm 17. Before use it, you'd better check which version of llvm you are installing.

I recommend installing Pop!_OS.
As long as you have lots of RAM, it should run "Fast".

Unlike Ubuntu, it works well from the start(Sample size of 1).
Brightness control and auto brightness work flawlessly.
