Where spatial information is included with open data, I regularly see polygon centroid geometry attached in place of the actual polygon geometry. Which can of course lead to all sorts of fun errors. Also a problem when only street names are provided for geocoding (related to #2) and line geometry is more appropriate.
Sort of a kicker to solve, since it requires a fairly advanced (for spreadsheets) sense of geospatial data. GeoJSON can help, WKT can help, PostGIS can help.
