oaf.org.au runs on wordpress. This used to be a requirement for certain things, particularly running civicrm.

We don't use civicrm any more (we've replaced it with campaignmonitor for mailouts and donorbox for donation management). We don't really use any of the dynamic features of the site - it seems to be just a fairly static site now.

The version of debian/ubuntu we're using is very old, which means that we're using an unsupported insecure version of php, which means that we're using an unsecure unsupported version of wordpress. Aside from the security issues, this also often leads to stability issues as the site crumbles under load (we've mitigated a lot of that by moving the donations off-site).

I think we need to do something to fix this, but I'm not sure what to do:

  • One option would be to update the base image and ansible configs to use new versions of everything.
  • Another option would be to migrate from self-hosted wordpress to wordpress.com hosting. I don't think this has been an option in the past because of the need for civicrm, but as we don't need that any more it might be an option now.
  • Another option might be to migrate away from wordpress entirely and start using a static site generator of some kind. There are various options for this, including tools that are specifically designed to migrate content out of wordpress
