I'd like to suggest that the default behaviour of geolocated posts be changed from 'appears in all maps' to 'appears in no maps' if no maps are specified.
We generally only want posts to display that are news summaries, and the intention is that these are displayed on a map specific to that purpose.
With the defaults as they are currently, it's very easy for an editor to miss the checkbox for the news map, meaning all other maps will have post markers displaying in them.

A core functionality of JEO is the geolocation of news content. Creating a map for news only is a bit counter to a system in which news is organized according to a taxonomy, tagged to a map, and connected to datasets. News is the fundamental way to provide context for the maps.
Tagging news appropriately is the best way to get the results you are looking for rather than removing the functionality of the system.
