can't set up island with root. "something went wrong with island setup. (stage 1)"

i have a rooted tablet that i want to set up island on to use apps that won't work on rooted devices, but as soon as i grant it SU rights, it immediately gives the error in the title, and i can't get it to work. i wanted to try using insular, but when i install it, it won't let me because it uses the same package name as this app, which for some reason persists even after i uninstall island.
