Items deferred from 2.7.0 (#844) plus new work:

• Migrate build system to hatch (Use hatch as build system instead of setuptools #848 — needs rebase on main, address @ofek's review feedback)
• Use trusted publishing to PyPI
• Add Python 3.14 support
• Remove legacy requirements/ files and MANIFEST.in
• Remove bumpversion config (replaced by hatch-vcs)
• Switch from entrypoints to importlib.metadata (Switch from entrypoints to importlib.metadata #792)
