Writing the review of the Dublin Collaborator summit, we did discuss a lot about how the corporation support the technologies they use (in our case Node.js)

Most of the companies use the technologies, reap the reward without participating nor spending time contributing (or even opening issue or provide feedback)

This issue is here to discuss about global solution and what we could do

Ideas

  • have a corporate way to present what is open sources, benefits, how to contribute and all others points around that. Maybe the Linux Foundation or OpenJS Foundation already got that ? It could help people in companies to present the topics to managers / C-levels
  • easy way for manager to provide funding and an easy way for donation. How can we have a process like that which would generate an invoice (or others type of official document for companies)
  • an official page with all the "sponsors" ? some special invitation on events ? Certifications discount ?

After multiple talk with some "big company" (insurance, banking, healthcare) most of them already subscribe to some kind of monthly reviews / documents / books (gartner for example)

A monthly report with multiples informations

  • Major / Minor version changes
  • Security fixes and vulnerabilities
  • What's new ?
  • Follow some big work / step of multiples working groupes
  • Some of the project that we are doing and can interest them
  • Conferences update / feedbacks ...
  • Maybe some articles / feedback from selected companies ?

I don't know how this would be possible, from both way to write that to share it or the marketing side of that ? Could also be not 100% about Node.js but mostly linked to the OpenJS ?

Following the discussion about how to keep the project healthy during the collaborator summit

  • discuss the idea
  • call to action

Topic to keep in mind

  • this "book"
  • interview by companies
  • interview by people
  • interview by maintainers
  • C-level keynote
  • meeting with companies
  • ...

I am building a complete resume of our experience building an OSPO and all the impact. But some consideration we can discuss today (and I will be able to be a bit more complete during the meeting).

  • open source is not know outside of the technical people (and even there there is misconception)
  • people don't see the impact of open source and that they use it without knowing every day
  • we did a quick check and 80%+ of all projects rely on open source technology (packages) and even more if we count core technology (like node.js and python)
  • it is hard to find way for corporation to contribute, as they require a lot of process when spending money / buying. Using Github Sponsor seems to be a nice way for companies already using github as this is added to the expense (but beta feature)
  • companies would be keen to join specific foundation but pricing can have an impact. The price itself is not the issue but more about "why spending hundred of thousands for that" so maybe have a lower tiers ? or some tiers that allow to join multiples groupes at once (for example, Linux + OpenJS foundation would be $600k )
  • companies don't see why it is important or even useful to them to contribute (both time and money) so maybe some example for them would be nice
  • TODO group (part of LF) seems to have nice publication / feedbacks, this could help a lot for companies and also have feedbacks or groups to help companies do the same work
