Improve efficiency when uploading lots of small files

CryoEM instruments can produce a very large number of small data files. MyData's upload speed could be improved if it zipped up collections of these tiny files before uploading. But this would require changes on the server-side (MyTardis) too to be able to unzip them and deal with the resulting checksum verifications.
