Tumblr "only viewable within the dashboard" oauth problem?

Running into my first problem in a while: trying to download a Tumblr post that requires you to be logged in, gave me the tumblr: Run 'gallery-dl oauth:tumblr' to access dashboard-only blogs message, ran that command to refresh the oauth, then ran the download command again, but it still gave me that same advice to run oauth, and the authorization error message. So I ran verbose:

Which.... did not illuminate things much. Really not sure what to do.

You need 4 tokens in total for this to work

access-token and access-token-secret (the values gotten by running gallery-dl oauth:tumblr) will be taken from cache when not present in your config, but it doesn't hurt adding those two values directly to your config file as well.

This will say Using custom OAuth1.0 authentication when everything is set up correctly

Hmm, I would think it would be grabbing the token and secret from the cache just fine after running oauth:tumblr once as it usually does for oauth on deviantart and such.

Still, I ran gallery-dl oauth:tumblr again to get a new token and secret, and this time copy-pasted them into "access-token": and "access-token-secret": spaces in my config under my api key and api secret. Unfortunately, it still gave the exact same result (aside from two changes: now when running verbose it does indeed say Using custom Oauth1.0 authentication before failing, and also instead of:

it instead says:

I created a new account and can access it just fine after running oauth:tumblr once without adding anything to my config file:

it instead says:

That's expected since it no longer uses your api-key directly.

By the way, what does the tumblr: {'meta': {'status': 404, 'msg': 'Not Found'} ... line say for you when using OAuth1.0 authentication?

Huh, so I ran oauth:tumblr again, and then tried downloading that blog with just gallery-dl https://mikf123-hidden.tumblr.com/ ignoring my config, but it hit me with

I did also try deleting the api-key and api-secret from my config for a moment and just leaving the access-token and access-token-secret since you mentioned it should only directly be using the latter, just for the sake of trying, but it gave the same error as above.

Also noticed a day or two ago when doing --clear-cache tumblr once that it said it deleted 0 entries from my cache, for some reason it didn't raise suspicion then but I remembered it just now, tried it again just now after of course having run oauth:tumblr a few more times, and it still says "deleted 0 entries". So.... my gallery-dl cache just seems to not be working for tumblr Oauth stuff?? Which is weird when it works for every other extractor.

That still doesn't seem to be the root problem of course, given its continued failure even after I manually copy the access-token and access-token-secret into my config.

I also have this issue despite having all four values in my config file. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to download from a dashboard-only blog.

I have honestly no idea why this doesn't work for you despite tumblr: Using custom OAuth1.0 authentication.

My tumblr settings are just these 4 values and nothing else. Maybe it has something to do with account settings?

Never mind, I’ve finally found what I was doing wrong.

I kept running gallery-dl oauth:tumblr when instead I should have run gallery-dl -c <path_to_custom_config> oauth:tumblr.

It works on my end now.

Oh wow, I did now also just run gallery-dl -c [path to config] oauth:tumblr and saw

Put these values into your configuration file as
'extractor.tumblr.access-token' and
'extractor.tumblr.access-token-secret'
or set
'extractor.tumblr.access-token' to "cache"
to use them.

The or set 'extractor.tumblr.access-token' to "cache" stood out to me, so I went into my config file, deleted the actual written-down "access-token" and "access-token-secret" and just put "access-token": "cache", then ran gallery-dl with my test url of an "only viewable within dashboard" blog, and it worked! I think that's the solution.
