Help using Termux

Hey sorry, I'm fairly new to gallery-dl and completely new to Termux. I've installed both of them on my tablet, and I seem to have gotten Termux to the point where it can create folders and write files within /storage/emulated/0 (files/folders which are visible to the native File Manager). Still, I've tried downloading galleries using gallery-dl, and after seeing Termux document the process of successfully downloading about 800 individual images, I can't find them anywhere on my device. How can I find and access these files, and how can I change the default directory that they are downloaded to? Thanks in advance.

Have you setup a config file to designate where you want the files saved?

Run gallery-dl -v to find where gallery-dl is looking for your configuration file.

You can create a config file and then specify it's location using the -o option. You could also use gallery-dl --config-create to create a config and then edit it.

Also, the output of gallery-dl should be showing the download location.

I have no idea where /data/data/com.termux/files/home/ is on my system. The only com.termux folder that I'm aware of is in emulated/0/Android/data, but I'm not seeing any files in that folder.

I'm not overly familiar with the Android filesystem. Perhaps try running a file search to locate your 800 downloads. When I run gallery-dl, the output displays the download location for each file.

You can manually create a config.json and then use the -o option to specify it's location going forward.

Use gallery-dl -c <file> to load a config file.

-c, --config FILE           Additional configuration files

-o is for setting options on the command-line, for example for overriding your config file.

You have to run termux-setup-storage to set up storage. That will make it so you can access your files in android with the ~/storage folder. You can edit the config you made with nano '/data/data/com.termux/files/home/.config/gallery-dl/config.json'. The config should automatically be used without needing to specify it each time you run gallery-dl. You can set the base-directory to be in the ~/storage folder with -o base-directory=~/storage or the equivalent in the config file. Stuff in the ~/storage folder is accessible to other apps.

I already ran termux-setup-storage before starting this thread. Yet I still have no idea where these files are being saved. Here is a screenshot of me trying to follow your advice in four different ways; maybe you can tell me where I'm going wrong.

-o base-directory=~/storage is an option for gallery-dl.

gallery-dl -o base-directory=~/storage URL

Replace "URL" with the url you're trying to download from.
I discovered that stuff is only accessible in other apps when in a subfolder of ~/storage in my case, so the command would be gallery-dl -o base-directory=~/storage/shared URL
The path seems to be different for you so replace ~/storage/shared with whatever path it needs to be (probably where you censored it so ~/storage/emulated/0).
Here's what it's like for me:

Edit: I'm using the termux from F-Droid, not the Google Play Store, which might be why the path is different. Only the F-Droid version is updated.

Okay, this works, but I still don't understand WHY it works. Can you explain why the files aren't visible until the "find" command, and what the -type f does? (And yes, I'm using the termux from F-Droid as well; almost missed that, but fortunately the one in the Play Store is essentially unusable). Anyways I appreciate the help, thanks!

Incidentally, I've found a file manager that can access the downloaded files at their default location. Man, file management in non-rooted android is a MESS! Material Files can access the Termux directory, but if I need to view/edit/replace the files in Android/data (without rooting), I still need to use X-plore.

Media files downloaded via Termux needs to be scanned through MediaScanner API, which is what termux-media-scan does, to be visible to gallery apps. Also, '~' refers to home directory, same as "$HOME" environment variable. Never use those characters in absolute paths, which is '/storage/emulated/0' in your case. I suggest you to specify directories as absolute paths in gallery-dl configs.

All find does is list all the files/folders in a directory and its subfolders. I just used the command to show you the file is there. -type f tells the command to only list files, not folders.

The reply before mine didn't load when I sent my message. The files are definitely viewable with other apps after saving to the folder I did without running that command for me.

Apologies if I sound abrupt, but you didn't give any information as far as errors or what you've tried. Did you see @Twi-Hard's response above that was marked as an answer to the OP?

I don't really understand what are you asking. Termux's default home directory is /data/data/com.termux/files/home. On top of that, Termux exposes it's home directory with DocumentsUI so you can access it from any app that makes use of DocumentsUI provider.
