This error has reared its ugly head again in 3.8. In 3.7.3 it was working fine.

I'm taking a look at the original repro in #1368, but it's working fine in 3.8. Maybe your case is slightly different than what was originally reported in #1368? Can you double check please and upload a repro where it doesn't work?
