Describe the bug

If you run into #41944, you'll see that /api/dataset returns an exception but a 202 response code

To Reproduce

  1. reproduce the issue 41944
  2. see that the API calls return a 202 code, but they should be returning error codes

Expected behavior

Return 5xx codes
