Note: Starting from this version, a license is required to use Laragon. This change allows me to prioritize support for users who contribute financially to the continued growth of Laragon.

New features:

• Auto backup: Laragon 2025 will auto backup data dir every 1 hour and keep 5 recent backups.
• Profile: Laragon 2025 introduces the Profile feature, allowing you to create multiple environments with different versions. You can easily add and switch between environments via Menu > Profile
• The default pretty URL will be {name}.localhost. This eliminates the need to modify the hosts file in Laragon, enhancing security. This simplifies multi-tenancy development by allowing multiple subdomains (e.g., tenant1.app.localhost, tenant2.app.localhost, tenant3.app.localhost,...) to route to the same application code of app.localhost, with each subdomain representing a different tenant.
• Enhanced Tool > Path > Add Laragon to Path: When you add Laragon to the Path (so you can call all service inside Laragon system-wide), it will automatically update the Path whenever a service version or profile is changed.

This discussion has already been had. The source code for the executable has never been open source, and there is no reason that @leokhoa needs to make it open source or indeed any reason that he should do so. v6 is what it is and development has ceased on this version. If v6 ceases to meet your needs, then you are free to move elsewhere, but obviously Leo should try to retain his enthusiastic and loyal v6 users if he can by getting them to move to v7, and that means having a low-cost, community supported license for non-commercial users.

We are all concerned about the future of Laragon - but my concern is whether Leo has the time to deal with all the technical stuff he needs to do to make Laragon a professional chargeable product, and whether he also has the time (and skills) to do all the non-technical activities (like customer service and marketing/communications/PR and strategising and administration) that he now has to do.

From my perspective, the open source benefits will derive from allowing the community to assist him with scripting etc. the services, adding new server options, helping with documentation, being beta testers etc. and giving input on what the executable needs to do. It will predominantly non-commercial users who will do these things - and open source for the executable itself is less important.

@Lexian-droid I wouldn't expect any further updates for v6 going forward, not even security-related. Commit #1007 updates the security readme to say we should report security issues, though v6 was specifically marked as unsupported for "EOL (End-of-Life)". 🤷

When you purchase, you get a receipt that has a link to manage your license. You can deactivate it, then install Laragon on another computer and activate it again.

Some comment on v7.0 after I tried out in my laptop:

1. License: hope that it is per user base, which can tie up with our email address. One user 2 devices. For lifetime license, the device(s) of same user can be changed but maintained as maximum 2. This is because every few years, we will upgrade/replace our old devices. Computers have their lifespan.

2. I put my projects under laragon/www/ folder, eg.:

Previously, I can access them using:

but now they can no longer be accessed with index.php as default. I can only access them using:

3. The MySQL databases are not copied over to the new mysql-8.0. They are still in the old folder mysql-8. When you access to the MySQL database after upgrade, you will see all your project databases gone due to this. I am using MySQL 8.0.37 in v6.

4. Can't find any config for the auto backup every hour. Hope that this can be user configurable, probably with Tools > Cron > cronical.dat so that we can enable/disable it and also determine on its backup intervals. Every hour is too excessive for me and could reduce the lifespan of my SSD.

I already use GitHub Desktop to sync my codes with GitHub and across devices with fetches and commits at anytime when I reached a milestone. So I probably don't need Laragon to do auto backup that often as every hour.

5. The Mail Catcher and Mail Sender tabs are disappeared in v7.

The "Get License Key" does not show for me because of 120% display scaling and I reported this bug for free. I am sure it is appreciated that I am saving potentialy lost sales becasue of this. If the intent was not to allow people to click the x and use it anway, leokhoa should take this relesase down and fix it. If he is not aware of this, I am sure it is appreciated that I brought this up. I thought that it was a nag screen and only licensed users get support.

Firstly let me state for the record that this is @leokhoa's software and he can do with it what he likes. If he wants to charge for it, that is his right (regardless of any contrary views from me or anyone else). That doesn't mean that personally I think it is something he should do - but personal opinions don't change that he has the right to do with it as he likes.

That said, here is my analysis of the economics of the license changes and my personal opinions about these changes:

Income

If @leokhoa Leo is going to make a living from this, he has to be looking to fully replace his current income and benefits as "Head of DevOps for a fast growing SaaS company" - and as someone who was a self employed IT person for 15 years I would think that he would have to make a minimum of 100k€ per year.

The current price in Euros is $50 per year or $150 lifetime and LemonSqueezy take 5% so the net result in EUR at today's exchange rate is 45€ or 135€ - so Leo would have to have 2,250 subscribers or sell 740 lifetime licenses per year or a mixture of the two.

According to Github, Laragon v6 had 1,506,339 downloads for the "wamp" installer and 12,213 downloads for the smaller portable executable in the 2 years since it was released (which was way way way more than I was expecting given the level of chatter in these discussions). Assuming that 10% of these converted into active installs, and only 10% of these convert to paid licenses, that would mean c. 15,180 paid licenses of one type or the other which is c. 7x more than needed to make the 100k€ per year.

Obviously there are some huge assumptions about the proportions converting to paid licenses, and despite assuming that only 1% of downloads turn into paid licenses I am still sceptical that this is one or two orders of magnitude to high, but on this basis it looks very positive 🎆 🍾 🍰 👍 👑 and I wish Leo well with his life choice to rely on Laragon for his income.

Value for Money

Looking now at value for money, for any commercial development, I think the price point is very fair by comparison to the costs of paying someone to create and maintain the development environment or compared to the salary of the person using it.

But personally, I am retired on a fixed income, and I am trying to create an open source package, and if I paid $150 for every piece of small software I needed I wouldn't be able to buy food. I also a string advocate of the open source movement, and generally prefer Open Source solutions, though I don't let that rule me if there are no open source alternatives. I suspect that many many hobbyists may have similar thoughts, and decide they are not going to pay this amount.

That said, I thought I would take a look and see whether the new functionality would nevertheless justify the costs for me...

What I expect vs what we got

• Laragon v6 is still free, and there is a free alternative in FlyEnv so v7 needs to justify its price.
• The cost is not small enough to be an impulse purchase.
• I ran the portable version and quite literally the first thing I tried caused it to crash!!!
  
  
• I installed the wamp version and appropriate security settings were not applied to the installation directory (because default settings for new folders are inaccessible on that drive).
• With Laragon 6 I had the opportunity NOT to install Notepad++ (which I already have installed so I don't want the Laragon version added) but now I don't have that option. This alone is a deal breaker for me.
• The terms of the license are not stated anywhere. This is a show stopper because I cannot know if I am going to break the license even when I evaluate the functionality without a license. In addition there are no Ts&Cs displayed in the installer that I need to accept to do the installation.
• The UI immediately asks for a license on the first execution, and there is no grace period given to users to evaluate the product before paying. Yes, you can click the close box and use it, but 1) that is not obvious, and 2) in the absence of a an explicit license you have to assume that doing this and continuing to use the product is illegal.
• Leo is still working full time and not yet focused solely on this. And the history of support when he has a full time job is - unfortunately - not great. Yes - of course his wife's pregnancy and new baby have taken a high priority, but only for the last year or so - there was apparently zero development done in 2023? And since he still has his family and a new baby (and many of us know just how much time a new baby takes for at least the first year) and still has a full-time job, what is the development and support going to be like in 2025? Sadly, I can see no reason to think that things will be better in the short term - we are simply being asked to pay now for something that was previously free without any reasonable expectation for development and support being any better.
• Leo's communications have not been great either - he could have said months ago that the new version would be chargeable, but instead he kept it secret until launch.
• Similarly Leo is breaking his word by starting to charge for it (this doesn't stop him having the right). The Laragon web site FAQs still says "Is Laragon free? Yes, it is forever free. Why Laragon is free? Because I feel happy when developing Laragon than making money. It’s true :)":
  
• I appreciate that there is a chicken/egg situation here - he can't provide professional effort until he has an income stream, and he needs to start charging in order to create an income stream, but from a customer perspective I would expect some professionalism for a chargeable product, which is not the case. For example, I am being asked to pay for professional levels of support when it is still not available, and despite now being a chargeable product, the executables are not code signed:
  
  A user will need to know to click More info to find out they can actually install this, and many will give up at this first hurdle.

But most of all...

• There just doesn't seem to be enough new functionality to justify moving from free v6 to paid v7 or indeed to justify a 2 year wait, and the quality issues are very worrying for a paid product. Most of this I could add myself or install the Laragonzo v6 build. I would guess that most people coming new to Laragon will just go for the latest version and pay up, but I suspect that once there is some feedback from early adopters, quite a lot of users will think about sticking with v6.
• Given that Leo is really asking for an act of faith here - buy a paid license now so that when enough of us do that he can quit his current job and have the time to develop and support Laragon properly - this lack of new functionality after 2 years is not IMO a good indicator. And IMO this is also a great example of why open source levering a community is better than a one-man-band. Sorry Leo, but that is how I see it.

In the words of Dragons' Den, "I'm out!" I am now going to evaluate the Laragonzo v6 build and FreeEnv and choose between them so I can get on with my project.

My intentions are now and have always been straight forward. We offered you help, advice, even to host a forum and you ignored us. We did try to tell you that this was a bad idea but you ignored us.

My review above was a straight forward account of my own experiences. I didn't "manipulate" anything to force errors, I just clicked on a menu exactly as shown in the screen shots. If you didn't test the app properly, that is hardly either me manipulating it or forcing errors. I am simply saying-it-as-I-find-it.

And I am not discouraging anyone - I am describing my own experiences and my own conclusions. It was you who decided that Laragon should now be a paid-for product, and I set my expectations accordingly and described where my experiences with the product didn't meet my reasonable expectations for a paid product. (Had it still been free, my expectations would have been different, but if I am going to pay for something I have a perfectly reasonable expectation for reasonable quality.) If other people decide that they agree with me, that is a consequence of your actions not mine. Take ownership of the mess that you have created.

But as I have said several times, I am not unsympathetic and IMO it is not too late to reconsider and choose an alternative strategy. The community wanted to help you and if you change your strategy now, people will probably return and still be willing to help. But continue down this road and I fear that you won't have a community willing to help or to buy licenses.

The performance difference you mentioned comes from Herd using Nginx, while Laragon uses Apache by default to support legacy PHP applications. Herd supports both Apache and Nginx like Laragon? I guess no.

@leokhoa Leo, I really suggest you stop blaming users when they state why they are unhappy they are with the decision you made. It does not come across well.

Since you brought up Herd, I'll highlight the many areas where Laragon outperforms it in an article, so others aren't misled. Once I'm able to work full-time on Laragon, its performance will improve even further.

If you think technical performance is the issue here, then you really really REALLY are not listening. Multiple users are stating bluntly that they are leaving because of the costs, lack of development and quality - no one is leaving because of performance.

And when exactly will you be able to work full-time on Laragon? People here are saying that you have put the cart before the horse - i.e. that you needed to start charging ONLY when you had done all this development you keep talking about.

All the indications are that you have made a major mistake with this. Please start listening.

I feel saddened by how Laragon change its stance to become 'premium' tool. This is how Oracle messed up many of its open source projects.

I'm fully agree with @Sophist-UK points. Laragon's business model is still unclear. What Unique Selling Points will Laragon delivers to make v7 worth every penny spent.

@leokhoa , if your demographic only targets US Dollars, I doubt Laragon is for everyone anymore. Along with its subscription plan (and unclear milestone of what Laragon will become).

Why not selling service and premium stuff along with free to use v7 instead?

Actually there are two ways to look at this...

From Leo's perspective, there almost certainly weren't enough donations to substitute for his salary in full time employment, so we can fully understand his desire to find a way to increase his income. He could, for example, have made the effort to check that those people donating money didn't have open PRs or issues. He could have done more advertising - he could have put a donation link in the app. He could have moved to a chargeable product in a different way.

But what he actually did was:

• Deliver literally nothing extra to the donors or the community as a whole as a response to the donations he did receive.
• Not give those people who made financial donations any credit when it came to the chargeable license - what a kick in the teeth that must have been for people who perhaps have donated more than the $50 needed to get a 1 year license.

So please, whilst we can have some empathy with Leo for wanting to switch to being a self-employed software developer, let's not lose empathy for users who have been given a raw deal.

Donations (of money or time) need to be a reasonable proportion of the benefit you gain from using Leo's software (minimum of 1% preferably 5%) or it is only a token gesture of thanks (which is still better than nothing).

I'm completely fine with paying for Laragon, as I'm sure many others probably are as well. What is holding me up from purchasing a lifetime license right now is the device limit being 1 with an activation limit.

I have both a laptop and a desktop. Considering that I would need to purchase a commercial license, I'm either needing to pay $100/year or $300 for the privilege of utilizing Laragon on two devices. I also do a lot of reinstalls of windows each year for various reasons. Requiring communication to ask for permission to activate Laragon on the same PC that I've been using it on already is too much to ask, especially at this price point.

In all honesty, I use Laragon primarily because I am lazy and don't want to have to spin up docker or use WSL and install a lamp stack manually. I'd really like to remain lazy in this regard. But in order for me to do so, I personally need to see a license that allows two devices (desktop and laptop) and without an activation limit to avoid headaches.

I would also ask that there is clear definition at the point of sale that is legally binding saying that the "perpetual (lifetime)" license is non-revocable, as there has already been companies revoking perpetual licenses just because the software was "outdated" and forcing the user to buy a new, more expensive, subscription-only license in the future. Purchasing a "perpetual" license should be a trust-less transaction so that I am not required to take someone's word for it being perpetual, but instead I am legally guaranteed that license to use the software, at least that version, indefinitely in the future.

If these requests are not possible, then I wish you the best of luck with Laragon 7, though I am hopeful that this can be done so I can continue using and paying for a product that I have thoroughly enjoyed in the past.

Solutions for EULA and other concerns are in the making. The order was not perfect but as far as I know, @leokhoa fixes one by another. Everybody may have their own "high priority issues" with Laragon, licensing, bug-fixing, feature developing, so I kindly ask for more time to make as many happy as possible.

@alxndr-w Well being as pragmatic and as fair as possible, if we shouldn't have discussions being civil, yet critical of Laragon, then the discussion forums as a whole shouldn't exist. I don't recall seeing anyone rush Leo into making rapid changes, but there has been nuanced discussion on this topic that has yielded nuanced responses, all of which helps to more clearly express viewpoints from all sides. Based on my conversation with Leo here, I'm sure that he will respond back probably with more clarifying questions, which I will be unable to respond to if this thread is locked.

If users like @boberski666 don't like what is being discussed, they can either civilly discuss their point of view or simply not engage in conversation and unsubscribe from notifications. Uncivil dialogue attempting to silence others and resorting to personal attacks shouldn't be tolerated, and I would expect that if you have the power to lock a thread, you also have the power of talking to them to make sure they aren't conducting themselves inappropriately, taking appropriate actions should they continue.

I think everything you want changed, you have expressed here and/or the Discord channel, no? Maybe reiterate everything together in one Discord post or a document for Leo and leave it at that, rather than posting things like Leo is not listening to you. That would be more helpful. And the end of the day, it's up to Leo what he wants to do. I don't think he is ignoring you, I just think it is a lot of time to read a voluminous amount of criticizing and respond to it all. But I might be wrong. I don't know what Leo thinks about it. It's just my impression.

Hello, I have only seen the comments so far, I would like to thank the creator for giving us one of the best gifts in web programming. Personally I can't afford a Laragon license, but I can be grateful for free software for a long time.
I would like to save up to be able to buy a license, I would really love to, but I have read several comments and they are absolutely right about the creator, that is, @leokhoa, it is as if he did not put any desire into the development of laragon, at the beginning it was quite innovative, but now he is falling behind; Other comments that I have seen are about the license guarantee, since there is no company that supports it.

In my personal opinion, even though Laragon was free, I did not have confidence in using it because I saw that @leokhoa did not update it constantly (I knew Laragon in version 4.15). In that case I solved using other technologies; But in the end I decided to use Laragon because of the portability since I format my PC often.

Currently, if one day Laragon 6 becomes obsolete, I consider alternatives such as wamp or migrating to an operating system based on the Linux kernel and setting up a LAMP stack.

In the meantime, I thank @leokhoa for giving away free software for quite some time, and I hope he does very well in laragon; Once Laragon org is established and stable I will be willing to pay for a license.

after many years of using xampp i was done with it and wanted to use a more stable engine. Because of the good reputation and positive feedback i decided to give Laragon a chance. Im just coding a bit on my home PC and not using it commercially.
Now I have also noticed that the latest version of Laragon is chargeable. In general, I think that good work is also worth a price but just to do a little coding at home, the monthly subscription is too expensive for me.

So i read about v6 which will stay free, but i was not able to find a comparison about the changes between the two versions. Are these just the Updates of the Packages (which i read i can also do manually with v6) or are there also other changes from v6 to v7?

After that period, you can continue using the version you have indefinitely. There's no need to purchase another license. laragon automatically created the domain http://code.abc and pointed to D:\laragon\www

The whole point of Leo making this a chargeable product was so he can spend time on making it professional, well we are now several months into this, and (as other people have commented elsewhere here) the web site has not been updated at all, and there are neither actual improvements to the documentation nor even promises of improved documentation.

I do agree there, if I'm expected to pay for something I think it's reasonable for it to be better across the board. When I started 7.0.6 it came up with a smartscreen warning which didn't fill me with confidence right off the bat. Having said that I am a long time Laragon user (I use it primarily for local wordpress development) so will be sticking with the older version for now. If things improve then I will purchase a license for sure.

Yes - this is due to a lack of code signing on the installer executable combined with the installer product Leo uses having been used in the past by malware authors for their own malicious purposes and is a common thing for executables that are not signed.

I first pointed out the need for code signing for a chargeable product in my review of 7.0.0 on 17 December 2024. On 30 Jan, after further criticism, Leo said he would implement code signing. And on 24 Feb he documented that this would be "fixed in next release" though we don't yet know when this will be.

People can make their own judgements about whether this level of responsiveness is indicative of someone working full time on supporting and enhancing Laragon (which is what Leo is promising in return for Laragon being a chargeable product).

Yes - I understand full well that everything is down to Leo - and because of this, even assuming that Leo was working full time on Laragon, my prediction was that he would not have enough time to do everything. I spent hours trying to persuade him that he should work cooperatively with the community to share the workload, but he refused to consider it.

In fact there is no real indication that he is working on any new functionality at all!!! He is on record as saying that he isn't interested in other people's ideas on improvements, and that he isn't planning any major improvements (because he prefers to do "incremental" small developments) - and that he intends to keep using a 15 year old development environment rather than invest in a modern one, and that he isn't interested in any change of UI to make it more modern - apparently because he is more interested in keeping the memory usage to c. 4MB than anything else.

Indeed having release v6.0.0 on 15 Sep 2022 and not delivered anything new for 18-months, on 9 March 2024 he promised "a new version of Laragon will be released soon." - and on 14 December 2024 after more than 2 years, v7 was announced which included chargeable licensing and a few new versions of software that you could have updated yourself (and probably did) months or even years previously. To call it underwhelming would be a massive understatement.

AFAICS from the amount of progress visible here he isn't spending anything close to full time on Laragon. So far in 3 months we have had tweaks to the licensing, and a few minor tweaks to functionality - but no updates to the web site, no delivery of significant new functionality, no improvements in documentation, no proper legal license (all of which should have been a prerequisite for making it a chargeable product rather than a vague promise for the future) and except for a promise of code signing (which is, in the end, for HIS benefit to avoid putting off new users) not even a glimmer of an indication of what new functionality he is working on.

And that is why my current personal viewpoint is that for the very limited differences between v6 and v7 that:

1. I am better of sticking with a stable Laragonzo v6 and avoid breaking changes for a few minor tweaks in v7 that I probably don't need or can create myself; and
2. There is neither sufficient new functionality nor any prospect of major new functionality sufficient to justify even a non-commercial license for $30 much less a commercial license for $150.

And the real tragedy is that he used to have an enthusiastic community who wanted to help and contribute to its development and who went around the internet evangelising about how great Laragon was a free publicity, and he had no end of offers of help from some of these users, but having rejected almost all such offers of help, and having failed to deliver any major enhancements whilst wanting to charge people for essentially what was and is still free, he has frittered away all that good-will and no longer has either the same enthusiasm and willingness to help nor the free publicity nor the income stream he was hoping for.

I'm the big fan of Laragon. I'm running a YouTube channel around 10Million followers and have recommended laragon to them. I thought to support him in donation ways.

But making this app unuseable is wrong choice (to me).
I regret sharing Laragon to my audience.
Also i suggest the developers and maintainer to share this into leo.

People like to explore technology won't buy unless it brings potential uses. Expensive CPU resources like AI's are becoming free and here comes the offline tool, that charges.

When Laragon was free he had a large enthusiastic community who went around evangelising and recommending Laragon to others, and key to him being successful with launching Laragon as a paid product were:

• Converting the vast majority of his existing community to paid users
• Maintaining their levels of enthusiasm and evangelism to attract new users
• Delivering significant extra benefits to justify the paid version

Sadly, as far as I can see he has failed on all of these.

Laragon was useful, but making it unuseable is not a good choice to me.

I just took a very very quick look at the v8 UI (by running it inside my existing Laragonzo directory) and I am genuinely starting to see some significant enhancements over and above v6 - indeed sufficient to make me start to reconsider whether I am now prepared to pay $30 for 5 years of updates for a non-commercial license. I think I will need to install a separate instance of v8 and do a more detailed comparison to see just what the changes are.

Of course, these improvements are just scratching the surface of what is possible - there is still a huge scope for providing a solution that automates a LOT LOT more for commercial developers who are creating new projects on a regular basis and who need to use different versions of software on different projects - and if @leokhoa can add these then I could really see Laragon commercial licenses taking off and being a big income stream. (And the non-commercial users would benefit too and perhaps start to evangelise about Laragon again and provide Leo with the free marketing he used to have.)

BUT (and this is a VERY VERY VERY BIG BUT) this is only going to happen if Leo is willing to be much much more open to ideas than he has demonstrated so far. So let's hope that he has a change of heart and is willing to listen.
