Is there a general forum for GPTel users?

Other than this github discussions page? Something like a discourse forum would be much better. GPTel is a tool that has depthness (lots of options and workflow tips and tricks) and dynamism (new AI protocols, like tool use and MCP come and go) to it, and a simple README.org, while useful for beginners, not enough to use the tool to its full potential.

Would @karthink think about starting a simple, free discourse forum? Like https://org-roam.discourse.group does? I think that way it is free to host a discourse discussion forum.

That sounds like a good idea. gptel can do a lot that I haven't even been able to cover anywhere. I just have to figure out what to do with this discussions page if I set up a discourse.

You can simply set up a pinned message or its equivalent letting people know that there's a discourse discussion forum. Discourse is better suited for discussions and works better, imo. So, people will probably migrate to it over time anyways. Github's Discussions forum isn't much like a forum, but a re-purposed issues tab.

I personally hate Discourse.

It is not information dense, the layout uses huge fonts and spacing everywhere, huge left and right margins, all leading to a scroll fest.
The threading is ... non existent so what is the point to migrate, it's just a long list of topics and then a long list of replies you scroll through, just like here.

It's just another spiffy "reactive" colorful design that brings nothing and has only disadvantages.

If does have good features, please educate me because I see none.

You can use the Discourse forum via the email interface, similar to a mailing list. You don't have to see the UI that you dislike.

Github discussions are re-purposed issues tab on github, they work poorly for community building around software projects. Otherwise, abovementioned software projects (and many others) wouldn't use Discourse, and would use "github discussions tab".

A simple, "gptel users forum can be found here" message on the README.org of this repo would point users immediately to the forums.

Also, "fragmenting" isn't really an issue, you can keep using github discussion that you like so much, and others can use both. There's no need to frame this discussion as "either github discussions or discourse forums".

Discourse is simply better for exploring a tool like gptel in-depth, and share usage tips, configs with the community.

just look at your screen and count the line of actual information per pixel. It is not an opinion, it is fact.
I do not have a big screen so the UI fills it with emptiness, I have it so I can have lots of information at once to read fast and correlate.

I disagree. It just goes the way of more colors and tie-in instead of actual actionable content and information.

I would appreciate a discourse forum. But if we are stuck here, I would try github discussions' email reply functionality. It may also save you from having to use the github's UI.
